Description

SUMMARY: Instructional aides shall work under the supervision of the Special Education staff, teachers and principal and assist the special education students as assigned.  Must also assist teacher in the classroom with daily instructional activities, non-instructional activities and student management.

 

Schedule:

 

June 17, 2024 -July 11, 2024* (Monday-Thursday) *No sessions the week of July 4th Monday, July 1 to Thursday, July 4 (12 total days)

7:30am-2:30pm (Duration up to seven hours daily)

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.

 

                   Regularly lifts 40 lb. individually and or pushes over 100 lb. students

                   Assist in student's educational plan including development and implementation of                    instruction

                   program and materials.

                   Understand and be aware of medical needs of students.        

                   Provide assistance with medical needs as assigned

                   Assist with behavior management programs and techniques.

                   Feed or help students feed themselves.

                   Assists students with toileting.

                   Manage required forms and records.

                   Assist with loading and unloading of students on the buses.

                   Sanitation of room and equipment.

                   Assist teacher in routing classroom operation such as tutoring.

           Supervises student involved in non-classroom activities; recess, lunch etc.

           Implements/follows teachers instruction of classroom procedures; reinforcement, philosophy and

           consistency.

           Assists with clerical duties; inventory, bulletin boards, collecting money, etc.

           Demonstrates an understanding of students’ problems.

           Follows through with prescribed behavioral management programs.

           Lifts or assists with students from wheelchairs to changing tables or designated areas.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises students when the teacher is not present.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and experience with severely handicapped children preferred.

Must meet highly qualified standards under NCLB

  • Two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
  • An Associate’s Degree; or
  • Meeting the standards on a formal assessment approved by the Michigan Department of
  • Education of Education (e.g., Michigan test for Teacher’s Certification or ACT Work Keys Assessment).

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to work with severely handicapped children.  The ability to interact with public and other staff is required.  The ability to tell where sound is coming from is essential in this job. The ability to meet multiple demands from several people.  Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must regularly lift up to 40 lbs. individually push or pull up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.  The position is exposed to infection and injury at a greater risk than the average person.
